Background to the War

World War II began in 1939 with Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland. There are many reasons for why World War II occurred. One of the most important issues was Germany’s desire to reclaim land that was seized in the armistice of World War I. Like World War I, the United Sates attempted to remain isolated from the event. However, with the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the United States officially entered the war. Over 800,000 Ohioans, around twelve percent of Ohio’s population, served during the war. The main theaters of the war ended in May 1945 (V-E Day) and in August 1945 (V-J Day). With Ohio’s industry power in manufacturing and rubber, companies like Goodyear Tire in Akron, Ohio hired both women and men to assist in supplying the cause.
